A dog's life

I haven't visited our Daily Rants for a while, and yesterday's raised a good point:

Why do people buy dogs, only to leave them outside all the time and rarely, if ever, interact with them?

I've seen several dogs get that level of inattention in my neighborhood over the years. Even when it's not criminal -- weather too cold or too hot, chain too short, etc. -- it tells us everything we need to know about the people involved.

Sex education

After all the furor over two sixth-graders engaging in sexual activity in an Indianapolis school -- apparently while teacher was being distracted -- it's nice to know that schools in Fort Wayne are taking "precautions to stop sex in schools." But these seem to involve "behavior codes" prohbiting sex in schools, not to mention kissing, hugging and all that other stuff that might lead to sex.

Get outta here, SOBs

There's an interesting back-and-forth in the comments of this Fort Wayne Observed post about mayoral candidate Matt Kelty wanting to fight SOBs -- sexually oriented businesses. I'm not sure how important this issue is, given all that will be on the next mayor's plate.

Rubbing me the wrong way

This just so sad, isn't it?

The raid at VIP Tanning on Coliseum came a day before a bill passed in an effort to boost certification of workers at massage businesses. The bill in the Indiana Senate would require massage therapists to be at least certified and have a specific amount of education before they could practice in this state, hopefully hindering corrupt businesses from practicing here. No one at VIP Tanning or VIP-The Office Spa was certified by the state, police said.

The sidewalk DMZ

Fort Wayne, like most cities in Indiana, wants everybody to help keep the sidewalks cleared. Muncipal code 99.047 says:

Pots of money

This is the editorial I wrote for yesterday's paper expressing doubts about the Fort Wayne Community Schools building rehabilitation plan. Contrast it with The Journal Gazette editorial giving a hearty endorsement to the project. That's the value of having two editorial pages -- on many issues, those still trying to make up their minds can get arguments supporting both sides.

My beef with Harrison Square

Apalace The Palace is a goner. Is there any point in continuing to pretend Harrison Square is a matter of debate instead of a done deal?

No reasonable doubt here

This advice comes too late to help Simon Rios, but let it be a lesson to any others who are contemplating the commission of heinous crimes. If you think you might end up pleading not guilty, don't show police where you left the body.

A friend asked me how I would like to be on this jury. I was reminded of something from a movie, perhaps the one about Judge Roy Bean. "I'm going to give you a fair trial and then hang you."

This just in

It's official. Tom Henry is the Democrats' major candidate for mayor.
