All about me

Second opinions

There are the people on the front lines who have to make snap judgments. Sometimes, they overreact, and it's up to someone else to put on the brakes. When the police are too zealous, it's up to the prosecutor's office to be the voice of reason and restraint. Here's a case where it worked the way it was supposed to:

Jared and me

In honor of Jared Fogel's visit to Fort Wayne yesterday, I stopped at Subway on the way home and got a sandwich for dinner -- a double meat steak & cheese, with mayo and all the trimmings. I can already feel the pounds melting away.

Gas pains

Yikes! It's bad enough to read about gas prices:

Many gas stations hit $3.45 or more Tuesday afternoon.  Independent gas station owners say while the prices go up, their profits go down.

Even gas station employees are stunned by this latest hike.  "About 9:15 Tuesday morning I raised the price to $3.49, and it was just a shell shock to everybody," said Independent Marathon Manager Rachel Parker.

Privileged class

USA Today and Glenn Reynolds (of Instapundit fame) square off over whether journalists should have privileges such as shield laws.

Cell out

Not me:

Americans would find it harder to part with their mobile phones than the Internet, television or landline telephones, according to a survey released Wednesday. The report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project also found that Americans are using their cellphones and other wireless devices for more activities including text messaging, taking pictures or sending email.

Bar acts

Gotta love it:

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. - All the world's a stage at some of Minnesota's bars. A new state ban on smoking in restaurants and other nightspots contains an exception for performers in theatrical productions. So some bars are getting around the ban by printing up playbills, encouraging customers to come in costume, and pronouncing them "actors."

Dream house

A guy can dream, can't he?

The Upper East Side mansion seized from former Penthouse magazine publisher Bob Guccione has been sold by his creditors for a very sexy price.

According to city transfer records, the 27-room townhouse on East 67th Street, between Fifth and Madison avenues, has just sold for $49 million to Wall Street financier Philip Falcone.

Exhausted by winter

If you see my car parked at a motel tonight, don't bother getting the camera and hoping for something scandalous. I'll be seeking nothing more adventurous than a little warmth.

And leave the dirt alone, too

OK, kids, into the bedroom and under the covers. We'll lock the door and stand guard. Ring the bell when you're ready for food or need to go the bathroom:

In the middle

Quick, Give me Hillary Clinton's full name, including the middle one. Bet you anything your first answer was wrong.
