Science

The holy trinity

Ah, life is good:

Good news for most of us, as recent scientific studies have concluded that coffee, beer, and pizza help cure cancer.

Now, if they'd just hurry up and prove the health benefits of fried food, all my life choices would be validated. Get that study done, KFC! (To tell you the truth, I like the grape more than hops. Have you seen all the studies about red wine?)

Nipping at NASA's ears

I am no particular fan of NASA, but I do believe in government support of space exploration, and NASA is the only space exploration we've got right now. So I'm particularly upset -- though not terribly  surprised -- that out-of-control congressional spending on earmarks might be threatening some of NASA's projects:

Quick, call Greenpeace

Obviously, we need a new Kyoto accord to help us get rid of all these global-warming menaces. Of course, that would mean the end of us, too. But that's OK, Mother Earth would then finally be safe.

Commie apes

Stalin wasn't just evil, he was also sublimely nutty:

THE Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ordered the creation of Planet of the Apes-style warriors by crossing humans with apes, according to recently uncovered secret documents.

Intelligent decision

Intelligent design has lost big-time in the Dover, Pa., case. Federal Judge John said in his ruling that “We find that the secular purposes claimed by the Board amount to a pretext for the Board's real purpose, which was to promote religion in the public school classroom." A key point, I think, is Jones' rejection of the notion that evolution is somehow anti-religious:

May all the Luddites freeze

Isn't it curious that people pushing the "science" of global warming are mostly anti-technology?

I suppose the only way to have avoided getting ourselves into this whole climate change mess was for us to have never progressed as a civilization in the first place. We could still be hunters and gatherers. Children would probably die at an early age from disease or exposure, but at least the population would not be so burdensome to the Earth.

Big and little

I am not going to say a single thing about this. Just read it and draw your own conclusions.

Green grass gasses

Finally, an effort to combat global warming I can support (I was going to say "get behind," but, well . . . ):

“In total around 14 percent of global methane comes from the guts of farm animals. It is worth doing something about."

The mystery solved

So, maybe the universe had an intelligent designer, who used evolution as a tool. There now, was that so hard?

Bad science, bad theology

Intelligent design has been roundly -- and rightly -- criticized for being bad science. David Darlington at In the Agora makes the valid point that it is also bad religion (or at least incomplete theology):

The god of Intelligent Design is not even an identifiably Christian god. Any religion that posits the existence of a supernatural creator-being can fit under its umbrella. At best, Intelligent Design represents a warmed-over deism, with an eternal watchmaker god.
