Tailing the Komets

Kind of a strange game tonight

The whole building feels kind of flat so far, including the teams. Komets are up 1-0 and out-shooting Elmira 10-3. There's been lots of penalties so far, mostly of the obvious variety. Coach is certainly fired up and just drew a bench minor for complaining about a Frank Littlejohn hit on Mike Dombkiewicz. Frenchy looks very sharp.

I heard Joe Franke is going to work the bench on Saturday for Chicago. That could be interesting. It will be good to see Joe again, though I just talked to him two weeks ago.

Something else that is really cool

Thanks to our web technical people Keith Hitchens and Melody Schmitt-Foreman, with a HUGE assist from cable access producer Pat Stelte, we've now got what we hope are the first of what will be weekly highlights up on our web site. You can access them by going to our Komets' site here, or by hitting the link on the left side called Komets coverage. The schedule for the Game of the Week can also be found there.

Now this is cool stuff no one can argue about

This is a submission from Hoss:

I don't know if the players read the boards, but I wanted to say a BIG ``Thank You'' to Jonathan Goodwin and JC Ruid. Today they came in to our school and spent time with over 200 3-6 year-old students because we are going to the Komet game as a school Friday.

The real questions about Rockford

This letter by UHL President Richard Brosal is from the Rockford Register Star and the reason it's relevant here is because many of these same questions would have to be answered whenever the question of the Komets and the AHL is brought up. These are legitimate questions that have to be answered in Rockford and would have to be answered here before any move could legitimately be made.

You can read the letter here.

Not a happy coach

Here's some of what he said:

``Not pleased. We never got a shot in the first 10 minutes.

``I saw effort and intensity and caring from certain guys. But every five man unit had somebody out there going through the motions hoping that I wouldn't notice. Their objective wasn't to win but to just get through it tonight. That ticks me off.

Tonight's game

If anybody would care to talk about that, you can do it here.

Ks activated A.J. Bozoian before today's game to take the spot by Pascal Morency.

Interesting article

From Mike DeDonker of the Rockford Register Star on the proposed movement of an AHL team to Rockford. I especially thought and agree with Steve Martinson's sentiments. He's right on 100 percent with this.

You can read it here.

Game of the week

For this week is Flint from last Saturday. Starts at 7 p.m. Wedneday on Comcast Ch. 55 and the replay is at 11 a.m. Thurdays.

We're getting close to having something neat from Randi, Tim and Pat on our home page to promo the games of the week if we can get one or two things tweaked. Maybe within the next week or two.

Today's story

Komets on campus about what Dave Smith, Bobby Jay and Lee Davidson are doing now can be found here.

It was a lot of fun to talk to those guys again.

The biggest difference

I've been thinking a lot lately about trying to quantify the difference between Greg Puhalski and Pat Bingham so I could explain how I see it to you, and there really isn't that much difference other than in personal style. Both are extremely intelligent men and coaches who are the same in terms of drive and the willingness to push their players. You see it more openingly with Bingham, but it was every bit there as much with Puhalski. He was much more private about it and did it behind closed doors. You may not believe that, but it is 100 percent true.

Muskegon hockey book

This comes from Skate who got a response from author Jay Vandevoorde who has written a book about Muskegon hockey:

``Great to hear from you!!!  If you want a copy or two you can send a check
directly to me.  The cost is $20.00 per book and $3.00 for shipping and handling
for the first copy and then $2.50 for each additional one.  If you want me to
autograph it or autograph it to anyone special with a certain message let me
know.

Roster moves

The Komets have placed Jonas Gabrielsen on waivers. He approached the Komets last week wanting more ice time, but he's curently the 12th forward and he doesn't want to play defense any more.

Pascal Morency may go on the 7-day injured reserve list tomorrow back-dated to Sunday so he could play Saturday if he's up to it.

J.F. Labarre is day to day with a groin pull. It's possible A.J. Bozoian could come off IR with a hip pointer to play Wednesday in Rockford.

More notes from the game

I was talking to Bob Chase and Komets PR director Chuck Bailey before the game about the difference in officiating this weekend and someone, I wish I remembered who, came up with the thing that summed it all up. ``There's calling penalties and then there's calling a hockey game. Anybody who can skate and blow a whistle can call penalties, but can they call a game?'' That makes all the sense in the world.

Which kind of leads me to coach Pat Bingham's post-game press conference. Here are some excerpts:

Injury report

Pascal is out 1-2 weeks with a separated shoulder. K.J. said he mostly got the wind knocked out of him, and the rest of the team left under its own power.

How bad is Flint? Except for the cheap shots, could you even tell they were on the ice after the first period? They looked incredibly disorganized. There were quite a few times when Generals were looking around at each other like they were trying to figure out who was supposed to do what.

From the Regina Post-Leader

This is Robbie Laird's father if anyone would care to send him a note.

Tomorrow's column

As for how physical the game was, let's ask the folks who were there when they get back. All I know is there were plenty of ice bags in the dressing room.

Great first period

No one from the league is talking about what was said during the board of governors meeting, Thursday, but this was a fantastic first period with plenty of hitting. Both teams came out flying at each other right off the bat, and Jim Hawthorne let them play. There was great pace to this, playoff pace.

Wings are up 1-0 on a short-handed goal. Kzoo is playing its forwards high on the Komets' defense on the pp, and it worked. There was a two-on-one when Mario Larocque fell down and Kory Karlander hit a perfect wrist shot.

At the game

K-Wings are expecting a huge crowd tonight because of a special promotion.

I'll be on with  Bob between the second and third periods if you'd care to listen.

Gasp! There's actually a supervising official at tonight's game. OK, that was a cheap shot. Jim Hawthorne is the ref tonight. Should be a great game.

More later.
