INDIANAPOLIS — State officials expect more backyard fireworks shows this year because budget problems have forced many municipalities to cancel large professional fireworks displays.The Indiana State Fire Marshal's office says it's issued nearly 200 fewer fireworks permits this year compared to last year.

Some of the most recommended ones are: Don't allow young kids to play with fireworks and supervise the older kids closely. Always wear eye protection. Keep a bucket of water nearby. Stay far away from Oakdale Drive in Fort Wayne.

Oh, say, did you know that nearly 5,000 fireworks-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms between June 2005 and July 2008? And that a Purdue expert says fireworks can cause permanent damage to kids' hearing?
