More details from the CBA. Sorry couldn't get this up sooner, but had to cover some football and volleyball.
Salary cap is $10,200 per week but teams may designate one exempt player whose salary only counts 50 percent to the cap.
The minimum a team must spend is $8,200 per week.
The limit/max teams can spend on housing is whatever level they are able but if the player opts to receive the money directly for a home they are buying or if they do not want to live in team provided housing than there are caps of $400/700 depending on if the player is single or has a family.
According to David Franke, the maximum salary cap is about $11,000 a week and the minimum is $8,000.
``It's about where we thought it was going to be all start of the summer,'' he said. ``Even if the IHL had remained, we were still going to drop the salary cap, so we're fine and don't have to make and adjustments. We're fine with everything. We're fine with our mix of younger players.''
Komets are not expecting to sign any more veterans because this is what they planned, plus they want some flexibility during the season in case of major injury.
A heads-up that Mike “Doc” Emrick, who does the play-by-play for Olympic and NHL hockey, will be on the Manchester College (his alma mater) campus this Tuesday, Sept. 7. He's presenting a convocation at 3:30 p.m. in Cordier Auditorium. We can work interviews into his day, if you would like to meet with him and you're invited to his presentation.
Kevin Reiter said he took less money to come to Fort Wayne than he could have gotten a couple of other places in the CHL for two reasons: He knows the Komets want to win, and his father has some health issues so he wants to be close to Pittsburgh.
``I'm comfortable with the team and the organization. amd I know the situation,'' he said. ``I'm really looking forward to playing with Bouch again. We're both fortunate because Al knows goaltending, and we kind of feed off each other a little bit. We really care about what we do, and we're working hard every day.
"I am absolutely thrilled that Kevin is coming back to the Fort. He was a fantastic teammate and we become close friends through the course of the season and have remained so since. Obviously having a guy of his calibre will be an asset to me and to the team going forward."
The Komets also announced Tuesday that defenseman Steven Oleksy has decided not to join Fort Wayne's roster and has been placed on waivers. Komets general manager David Franke said Oleksy felt he was going to have a difficult time making the team and is looking for a spot in the ECHL.
``I disagreed with him but this is something he thought about,'' Franke said. ``We'll accommodate him and probably look for another defensman. It has to be an American kid for immigration reasons to get him all filed and signed up.''
Will he have any trouble finding one?
The Komets announced Tuesday that goaltender Kevin Reiter has agreed to terms and has been added to the 2010-11 preseason roster.
Reiter, 29, will be returning to the Komets for his second stint after collecting the 2008 Huber Trophy and Turner Cup Championship with the Komets. Reiter registered a career high 32 wins in the Fort Wayne nets during 2007-08 while posting a 2.34 goals-against-average and .910 save percentage before sharing time in the playoffs with teammate Nick Boucher.
yes I've been talking to David for a few days now. We've been going back and forth on a few things and I'm trying to decree what option is best and makes the most sense. I have a few teams that need an answer by Sunday. I've been talking with a few teams and I should have a deal completed by the end of the weekend somewhere in the US. I have a few friends trying to pursuade me to join them elsewhere, but I'm still waiting on another teams' offer sheet.
After the discussion came up on the blog recently, I asked David Franke how he would respond to people who say the Komets must be cheating to amass such talent.
How do you replace the reigning Goaltender of the Year? By signing a former Goaltender of the Year.
The Komets might be close to signing goaltender Kevin Reiter, general manager David Franke said.
``Nothing is finalized, and I don't expect to know anything totally about him until the middle of next week,'' Franke said. ``There's a very strong possibility he may come back. We're working toward that and hopefully it will happen."
Reiter has told me in the past he'd love to play in Fort Wayne again.
More later. Off to my nephew's football game.
Thursday and Friday 8-6, my vast collection becomes your treasure. 330 Field Street. Or if there is, I'm too swamped by football stuff to be able to take the time to find it, so here's an entry from 2007 by the late, great Skate1240. This is definitely going into my next Komets book someday if there is one.
