Tailing the Komets

Now the Komets start building

Just got off the phone with Komets General Manager David Franke who has to start building his protected list for next week's IHL expansion draft for Dayton.  Each team can protect 13 skaters and one goaltender, and as Franke understood the rules, pull a player back into protection once they have lost a player. The most a team can lose is three players.

Franke said the Komets or other IHL members will not release which players they choose to protect.

Meetings report

The International Hockey League (IHL) is pleased to announce the addition of the Evansville IceMen, who will begin play within the next two years in the IHL. The Board of Governors unanimously awarded a member club to EI Acquisition, LLC which is owned by Ron Geary. Mr. Geary is the owner of Ellis Park Race Track, which he acquired from Churchill Downs in September 2006 and the Evansville IceMen, who currently play in the All-American Hockey League (AAHL). Further information regarding the Evansville IceMen will be available in the next few months.

Penguins win

Well, I got the Game 7 right, but I went with the wrong team and now I owe Burgee lunch. Have you seen how that guy can drink his lunch? Oh, right, you have.

I felt from pretty much the opening faceoff tonight the Penguins were playing the better game. They controlled center ice and won all the battles in the corners and behind the net. Brad Stuart... wow, is he having a bad day.  Did anybody else notice that the Red Wings kept trying to go short-side on Fleury all night? How many times did they simply miss the net because of it?

Would it work here?

Everytime there's a rumor about a team changing leagues in recent memory, there's always talk that junior hockey is an option. Do you think that could ever work in Fort Wayne? If you had the choice of pro or junior, would you definitely rather see pro

Interesting note

Komets PR Director Chuck BIn 58 years of IHL play, the league has had an unchanged year of member teams only eight times, with last year being one.  If we had gone unchanged this year, it would have been back-to-back seasons of no change for only the second time in the history of the league (it happened only once, the member teams of the IHL for 66-67 stayed the same for 67-68 and 68-69).

Statement from Bloomington PrairieThunder

“While we are obviously disappointed by the announcement from Kalamazoo concerning its departure from the International Hockey League, we are certainly confident in the plan of action the league has been building.

“Given the fact there are so many positive things on the horizon for the league regarding expansion, we feel very good about the direction things are headed and the overall strength of the IHL.

Komets re-sign Mironovic

The Komets announced Tuesday that Danko Mironovic has become the first player to re-sign for 2009-10. IHL release/response

The International Hockey League (IHL) announced Monday that the Kalamazoo Wings have chosen to withdraw from the IHL. The IHL worked to engage Kalamazoo's management team in discussions about many issues, unfortunately those efforts were unsuccessful. Kalamazoo's decision to part ways with the IHL is both disappointing and perplexing to league officials due to the timing of league expansion possibilities.
