Comfort food

beanee.jpgI hate to tell you what I had for dinner last night; you will laugh at me just as my friend did when I told her on the phone. But if I can't handle the reaction to the controversial topics, I shouldn't be a blogger, right? I didn't feel like cooking and hadn't picked up anything on the way home, so I microwaved a can of Beanee Weenee.

The last straw

Had to happen: fake cigarettes on the street:

Authorities seized nearly 600,000 packs of cigarettes with brand names like Marlboros and Newports, half of which are suspected of being counterfeits from China, prosecutors announced Monday.

Naggier

You might remember how I ranted after President Bush said we were "safer but not safe." What he was saying was understandable, but he was mangling the language. It's adjective, comparative, superlative: safe, safer, safest. A commenter said, well, what do you expect from someone who is such a poor communicator? But what do you say about the Indianapolis Star committing the same sin?

Cheese it!

mickey.jpgFirst it was that woman who spilled the criminally hot coffee on herself. Now there is this. McDonald's is apparently out to kill us all:

MORGANTOWN - A Monongalia County man is seeking $10 million from McDonald's after an employee put cheese on his sandwich.

Dark days

Here I am, the true believer in markets and free enterprise, alarm-sounder over government intervention and over-involvement, praying that the FDA nips this heresy in the bud:

Like many battles, this one's being fought block by block. Victory, for whoever prevails, will be sweet. Or bitter — or even bittersweet. It all depends on how you like your chocolate.

Food fast

Holy crap! Is it possible that advertising actually works, and more on children than adults?

CHICAGO  --Anything made by McDonald's tastes better, preschoolers said in a study that powerfully demonstrates how advertising can trick the taste buds of young children.

Read this between bites

August is National Sandwich Month.

The study said that the average U.S. citizen eats about 200 sandwiches a year, and the average child will eat around 1,500 peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches before graduating from high school, Texas A&M found.

Go eat something over the sink to celebrate.

Food fight

The editorial pages of The News-Sentinel and The Journal Gazette have had many disagreements, but never over anything this serious (from The New York Sun):

Bar fight

Quite a one-two punch. First, Kevin Leininger's column:

The state collected $395,686 in food and beverage taxes from Allen County bars and restaurants in June, down a whopping 27.8 percent from the same time last year.

Hot dog

By God, it's about time America started kicking them furriners' butts:

NEW YORK—In a gut-busting showdown that combined drama, daring and indigestion, Joey Chestnut emerged Wednesday as the world's hot dog eating champion, knocking off six-time titlist Takeru Kobayashi in a rousing triumph.
