A senior moment

"Hey, old-timer, are you sure that's not a phony ID? You don't look a day over 35 in that photo." Liquor stores finally give up on trying to figure out who is trying to pull a fast one and who is not:

It's difficult for 52-year-old Edgar Logan to recall the last time he was asked to show his ID when buying alcohol.

The hard stuff

Let's pretend Mom and Dad are saints. That'll sure get the kids off on a good start toward adulthood:

Dave Mason of Lafayette might enjoy a beer or a mixed drink when he's out on the town, but the father of two doesn't usually keep the alcoholic beverages in his house.

"I guess the less they are exposed to it, the better," he said.

Seriously or not at all

Some insightful Veterans Day thoughts:

My father came out of World War II with decidedly mixed feelings about war: that some times it was necessary and that most of the time it wasn't. He was never particularly political, but he was outspoken that no child of his would ever serve in any war that wasn't clearly and brutally necessary to defend the United States. "I'd break both your legs first," he would say while watching war movies and documentaries on TV.

Butt out

Seems like they have a pretty evenly divided City-County Council in Indianapolis. The vote was 15-14 in favor of a hotel tax for the Capital Improvement Board and 15-13 to make it tougher to panhandle. And now:

GREENCASTLE -- Mysterious doings were happening in the East College building at DePauw University Tuesday evening as members of Hoosier State Paranormal investigated one of the oldest structures on the campus.

Located at the center of campus, East College is a symbol of the University's tradition of excellence and learning.

Third-sector battleground

Here's an interesting libertarian take on the work of Indiana University's Elinor Ostrom, announced yesterday as co-recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in economics.

That's life. Well, not so much

Anytime you feel safe when hearing about a criminal getting a "life" sentence in Indiana, better listen for the qualifier "without chance of parole." If you don't hear that, you may not be getting what you think you are from the criminal justice system:

Hundreds of Indiana offenders sent to prison for life are serving much less, a newspaper investigation has found.

Good ending

Authorities aren't always sympathetic when someone suffers a mental breakdown, so it's heartening to see this compassion from the Marion County Prosecutor's Office:

An Indianapolis man who prompted a seven-hour standoff with police after he wouldn't come out of his downtown apartment will not be charged.

A foreign idea

Those crazy Swedes:

Sweden's centre-right on Saturday announced income tax cuts of 10 billion kronor to stimulate the job market, its primary objective.
