Opening Arguments

Idiots' delight

The Benghazi scandal is getting riper by the minute, a third of the country is dealing with the storm of the century, the economy is still on the verge of collapse and the debt is still unsustainable and growing, but let's not let any of those minor concers distract us from the really important issues:

TV Guide Magazine: Mr. President, what is your favorite television show?
Obama:
I am a big fan of Homeland and Boardwalk Empire, and I think The Wire is one of the greatest shows of all time — and I confess I am an avid watcher of SportsCenter.

TV Guide Magazine: And the First Lady's favorite?
Obama:
Michelle and the girls and I love watching Modern Family.

And from the other side:

TV Guide Magazine: What are your favorite current TV shows?
Romney:
My favorite shows are Modern Family, Justified, 30 Rock and NCIS. And although it recently ended, I've really enjoyed Friday Night Lights.

TV Guide Magazine: And Ann Romney's favorite?
Romney:
Ann loves Modern Family too — it's our favorite show to watch together.

What is this universal love for "Modern Family" among the political class? I've never even seen the damn show, so I guess I'm not qualified to vote in this election. I gather from the promos (and here's the Wikipedia entry) that it is the latest effort to -- dear lord, again? -- hit us over the head with "It ain't like Ozzie & Harriet today and never was that way anyway" obviousness. I mean it's got a gay couple who adopt a Vietnamese baby, for God's sake.

And by all means let's not forget the music:

As Hurricane Sandy barreled toward the Mid-Atlantic this morning, and the White House scrambled to get the commander in chief back to Washington, President Obama could be heard on the radio airwaves in battleground Ohio talking about his iPod.

“I’ve got a pretty good mix. I’ve got old school. Stevie Wonder and James Brown. I’ve got Rolling Stones. Bob Dylan. And then I’ve got everything from Jay-Z to Eminem to the Fugees to you name it,” Obama told DJ E.J. Greig of Cincinnati’s 101.1 The Wiz in a pre-taped interview.

“There’s probably not a group that you play that I don’t have on my iPod. So I’ve got some jazz, John Coltrane, Miles Davis. Got some Gil Scott Heron on there. You gotta mix it up,” he said. “It just depends on the mood I’m in.”

Very eclectic taste, Mr. President, very fitting for someone who likes to sit down with the wife and kids for an episode of "Modern Family."

And the other side, although I'd be willing to bet Romney doesn't have an iPod:

In a new interview with Parade, Mitt Romney and his wife Ann offered some insight into their musical tastes and a wishlist of acts they'd like to see perform at the White House, should the Republican presidential nominee win the election in November.

The list includes the Beach Boys – "Even though I know it's not the same group it used to be," Romney noted – and country stars like Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith. Romney also name-checked bands like Aerosmith and Alabama, while his wife – who revealed a preference for jazz, pop, rock, and classical music – noted that the Romneys have a friend in the Eagles. (Former lead guitarist Don Felder is slated to play the Republican National Convention next week.)

The most unexpected band on Romney's list of favorites? "The Killers are one group I enjoy," he said. The band's lead singer, Brandon Flowers, is Mormon.

There you have it -- The Beach Boys and Garth Brooks vs. John Coltrane and Miles Davis. If that doesn't make up your mind, nothing will.

And, hey, happy to be there for you.
