All about me

No beef here

Huh:

In the U.S., the country that made the hamburger a global icon of American fast-food cuisine, beef is about to fall another spot on the meat scale.

Get a job, kid

Every teenager should be required to work a grubby job:

I believe internships and travel are enriching and can help young people build their visions of the world and place in it, and my children have experienced both. But they aren’t a substitute for a grubby job with an unreasonable boss and an inflexible schedule. This too is part of the real world. Nobody wants to hire an attorney or brain surgeon and find out their case is his first real job.

Measles panic

Dry heaves

I saw a report on CBS this morning about a great surge in the number of Cubans trying to cross the 90-mile strectch of water between the island and the United States and thought, "What the hell?" Isn't a major point of "normalizing" relations with Cuba to cut down on the number of people fleeing that country? Why are we suddenly an even more attractive destination? Naturally I had to turn to the print medium to get the part of the story TV couldn't bother with:

Email stress

Remember the days when we simply could not not answer the telephone? If we didn't pick that thing up, who knew what important news we might be missing? Email is getting to be that way:

Shameless plug

I will be on WFWA, PBS Channel 39, at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow with Journal Gazette Editorial Page Editor Karen Francisco, IPFW's Andy Downs and moderator Bruce Haines for the annual legislative preview edition of "PrimeTime 39." The early consensus among General Assembly watchers is that there won't be anything big or controversial like gay marriage or school prayer this year, so legislators will concentrate on the basics, such as education and a new two-year budget. But we don't always agree with conventional wisdom.

Old Men's War

This story about a challenge being faced by veterans' organizations makes it sould like a new phenomenon, but it's not:

EDINBURGH, Indiana — Membership in local military organizations is changing; and attracting new, younger members is a key to keeping the groups running.

Alert!

Too many alerts?

When was the last time you suspended all notifications on your phone? Maybe in airplane mode or at night (and even then, only if your alarm can still work), right?

Allow me to drone on

We can now get our own personal drones for a few hundred bucks, and I guess they're -- um -- flying off the shelves this Christmas season. This is -- understandably -- raising safety concerns:

Be right back

On vacation. Back on Monday, Dec. 22.
