Initial reports indicated that a man accidentally shot himself in the neck. According to an officer on the scene, the man forgot he had his gun in his gym bag and dropped the bag on the floor and the gun discharged.

I remember being surprised if not downright shocked when William F. Buckley, at the time the most prominent conservative thinker around, not only softened his stand on marijuana but even went out beyond the three-mile limit and actually tried the stuff. Now we have Michelle Malkin, no slouch when it comes to conservatism, rethinking the issue for personal reasons:

A court in Egypt has sentenced 528 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi to death.

They were convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacks on people and property.

The group is among some 1,200 Muslim Brotherhood supporters on trial, including senior members.

Last year, Indiana became one of the few states to pass a law requiring anti-bullying programs. Schools are required to offer programs and training for students and staff on preventing and identifying bullying, which is defined as "an imbalance of power, with a pattern or repeated acts over time, or acts done with the intent to cause harm."

In my experience, those individuals who carry do so because they very consciously do not want to belong to the class of citizens that is inherently helpless — totally reliant upon the state to protect not just themselves but their family, friends, and neighbors. If the choice is between protectors and protected, they choose to be protectors.
