iPan, uPad,

Here comes City Clerk Sandra Kennedy, blazing a trail into 21st century technology with blinding speed:

Sandra Kennedy, who has held the city clerk's office since 1983, on Wednesday announced a plan to replace stacks of paper with tablet computers for council members; stream meetings live on the Web; and provide easier mobile access to agendas, ordinances and other council documents.

Deatch watch

Members of the Indianapolis Newspaper Guild have lauched a "Save The Star" campaign complete with downdown billboard, an effort that can most charitably be called misguided:

Bemoaning years of job cuts and pay freezes, the guild is going public with its disdain for Gannett, which owns the Indianapolis Star and 80 other community newspapers, along with USA Today and other publishing businesses.

End of the line

Sad news for all of us aging, cartoon-loving baby boomers:

A pioneer of local television in Fort Wayne, John Manahan Siemer passed away over the weekend.

Siemer known fondly as “Engineer John” for a generation of baby boomers served the Fort Wayne area as the host of morning cartoon show 'The Cartoon Express."

He was employed at WKJG Channel 33 from 1954- 1971.

Bad bargain?

Granted, it's tricky trying to second-guess the prosecution in a given case, because we don't have the intimate knowledge of all the facts and the prosecutor's experience in weighing those facts. But some actions appear more unjustified that others. This particular deal seems like the kind that gives plea bargaining a bad name:

Smarter than the state

A growing number of Hoosier jurisdictions have been saying "Nuts!" to the state legislators who stupidly decided that unopposed candidates shouldn't be on election ballots. Now add Fort Wayne to the list:

Lying liars lies

I'm not sure if this is a vauable innovation in the political process or a further coarsening of our public life, but it is at least mighty interesting:

Democrats and Republicans in Allen County have unveiled new attack websites targeting the opposition's candidate in the Fort Wayne Mayor's race.

The Republican Party of Allen County created this site: www.therealtomhenry.com

Color conscious

The City Council did a service to commerce and free enterprise by largely deregulating taxicabs. Even a one-cab business -- what some in some cities would call a gypsy cabs -- is OK here.

(Note: I wrote a column about work back in 2003 that I just re-read and still like. So here it is, in celebration of Labor Day on Monday.)

There's a guy who visited with our editorial board a time or two several years ago. He'd worked for whoever was mayor at the time, then became involved in some government job-training program.
``Our goal is not just to get people jobs,'' he told us once, ``but good jobs, something besides being a janitor.''
He didn't exactly sneer when he said it, but the disdain was there in his voice.

Road warriors

Be careful out there

Indianapolis may join the growing list of cities with restrictive police pursuit policies:

The chase that ended in the deaths Tuesday of two suspected car thieves would have been banned under a new pursuit policy under review by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
