Roach clipped

Looks like we won't have Allen County's merry prankster of politics to kick around this year:

A nickname has cost perennial candidate Dave Roach a spot on the May 8 primary ballot, handing the Democrat Party nomination for Allen County Commissioner to retired firefighter Gordon Anthony.

Down for the count

I hate to disagree with someone as politically astute as Andy Downs, but, well, I disagree with him:

The buzz surrounding “Super Tuesday,” and the 419 Republican delegates that go along with it, raises a question that comes up almost every presidential cycle: Will Indiana still matter by the time the nomination fight gets here in May?

If it's Tuesday, this must be Indiana

In its "Weekly scorecard" feature on the Saturday editorial page, the Journal Gazette put this item on Richard Lugar in the Tossups catetory instead of the Losers category:

The senator’s lack of a true residence in Indiana is legal – but it looks bad in an election year, particularly after disclosures that taxpayers paid for his hotel rooms when he visited the Hoosier state.

Temptations

If you're thinking about buying some sex, you might want to hold off for a while.  I wouldn't recommend it in Fort Wayne at any rate:

The promise of sexual favors in exchange for cash lands nearly a dozen men behind bars. It was part of an undercover operation that went down last Friday.

Does this Whopper make my butt look big?

Tough love

A Fort Wayne mother drags her son along for her 15 minutes of fame:
An Indiana mom caused a stir on a street corner when she forced her teenage son to stand there wearing a sign that read, "I lie, I steal, I sell drugs, I don't follow the law."

Dynesha Lax said she was tired of dealing with her 14-year-old son breaking the law and getting into trouble. After he had a recent run-in with the police, she came up with an unusual punishment.

An eminent suggestion

What would you call a proposed bill to make it more expensive for state-sponsored universities to acquire land? How about "a good start"?

Ball State University spokesman Tony Proudfoot says the school opposes the bill because it changes the law for just one entity that can use eminent domain.

Couldn't agree more. Make it more expensive -- and much more difficult -- for all units of government in Indiana to acquire private property.

Picture this

Harmony

Can't we all just get along?

The next year of city government will likely be full of harmony compared to 2011, the new chairman of City Council said.

Council President Tom Smith, R-1st, said he expects to oversee a “professional” council focused on getting work done without the partisan bickering that dominated much of 2011. Smith was unanimously voted this year's council president Monday in an annual reorganization meeting.

Shameless plug

If you want to hear a little political talk about the just-started session of the General Assembly, check out the annual legislative preview edition of WFWA Channel 39's "PrimeTime39." I know I know, that's the same time as "Jeopardy!" But there'll be a link at the PBS39 website if you want to watch it online on your own schedule. The usual panel will be there: Leo Morris of The News-Sentinel (hey, that's me!), Karen Francisco of The Journal Gazette and Andy Downs of the IPFW Downs Political Center. Bruce Haines of WFWA is the moderator.
