Tailing the Komets

A couple of notes

* For the second time we saw two FW kids score a Komets goal. Bobby Phillips started playing hockey here when he was 3 1/2 and moved to Indy when he was 10.

* The last 10 games, Komets have out-shot opponents 98-70 in the third period but before tonight the third-period goals were 5-5. Still, that is shutting teams down in the third period.

* Larry Sterling has been in goal for only two of the IceHawks' last eight games in Fort Wayne.

* Smallest crowd of the season tonight, 7,283.

Thank goodness for Larry Sterling

Seemed like everyone had some fun tonight at Larry's expense.

Komets won the game 4-2 as Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock and Sean O'Connor were the stars. The youngsters have really shown up big of late. Kind of a typical Port Huron road game, waiting to take advantage of mistakes for offense.

A couple of notes

You may have seen a little history tonight and not even realized it. The Komets' off-ice officials checked the tape after the game on Sean O'Connor's goal and added an assist to goaltender Tim Haun, giving him two assists tonight. He's the first Komets goaltender since Aaron MacDonald on Nov. 6, 1999 to get two assists in a game. That might be the team record, but no one knows officially if any Komets goaltender has ever had three in a game -- unless Dubchak (Neal) knows of someone.

The Komets' record for goaltender assists in a season is six by Murray Bannerman in 1977-78.

Shaf's surgery result

For the first time since he was injured Nov. 14 against Dayton, Komets forward Konstantin Shafranov was able to eat properly on Thursday. The veteran underwent an hour-long out-patient surgery on Wednesday to repair a pair of broken bones in the upper left side of his face.

Seabass retires

Guess Sunday against the Komets was Sebastien Laplante's last game. This is from a release by the Quad City Mallards.

``The Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, today announced that goaltender Sebastien Laplante has retired from hockey and that defenseman Darren McMillan has been waived in order to clear the way for McMillan to pursue a playing opportunity in Germany.

Bus trip deadline approaching

What better way to sleep off Thursday's feast than by taking a nap on a bus ride to Muskegon? Time is running out for those who'd like to go to Friday's game at the Lumberjacks. Plus, you get a private showing of the Schebig and Burgee comedy show including foo foo drinks. (Yet again, Burgee is finding a way to avoid work.) On the way home, you can listen to Schebig snore (put shaving cream on his face.)

Project Komets Kare Package IV

Over the last three years, Fort Wayne hockey fans have donated more than 100 barrels of items to Project Komet Kare Package. The fourth year, sponsored by the Komets and The News-Sentinel, starts Saturday and continues next weekend.

On their way into games Saturday and Dec. 4 and 6, fans can drop off donations, which we make sure are delivered to troops with the help of National Guard representatives.
