Flag Day

God hates fags! Er, flags. OK, both:

Chalk up another one on the list of random things the Westboro Baptist Church hates: Flags.

In honor of Flag Day, the WBC issued a (probably unintentionally) hilarious press release -- which came a day late, because evidently it takes a little while to write a song about how "They'll face the wrath of God for sure/Cuz they worshipped a filthy flag."

After the fall

The Washington Post's Politics and Policy blog points to an article in the evagelical magazine World ("Lessons from a broken man") in which self-deposed Rep. Mark Souder talks about his affair and life after the scandal:

The truth is out there

But we know with absolute certainty that all that can be known about climate change is known and the debate is over except for a few fringe wingnuts who won't face reality:

New research by astronomers in the Physics Department at Durham University suggests that the conventional wisdom about the content of the Universe may be wrong.

Smoke and mirrors

Over to you

Two different views from two sets of experts. The National Academy of Sciences:

Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for — and in many cases is already affecting — a broad range of human and natural systems."

But from the Royal Society:

China syndrome

If we start referring to a certain Indiana college town as the People's Republic of Bloomington, would that be guilt by association?

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has said that he is a Marxist, yet credits capitalism for bringing new freedoms to the communist country that exiled him -- China.

Hot stuff

Comings and goings

I haven't bothered you with a word-usage peeve lately, so indulge me today. Under the headline "Emigrant first in her family to earn degree," the South Bend Tribune has a story about a refugee from Bosnia getting her degree from Indiana University South Bend. There is this short paragraph:

She and her family eventually found their way back to their village, but learned there was no future for them there. They immigrated to South Bend 10 years ago.

Cross to bear

In the ruling allowing a white cross to stay on a stretch of Mojave Desert to honor the dead of World War I, Justice Kennedy made the point I was trying to get across in a recent post, and he said it much better:

The bottom line, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote, is that "the Constitution does not oblige government to avoid any public acknowledgment of religion's role in society."

Quaking

By God, I love science:

CHICAGO - Can cleavage cause an earthquake? Women all over the country are testing the theory.

It all started with a blog post from Purdue University senior, Jennifer McCreight. She was upset over comments a senior Iranian cleric made about women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously.
