Opening Arguments

Third way

The Muncie Star Press states the problem:

Daniels is not the first to forego a run for higher public office because of family concerns, and he won't be the last.

But it's an indictment on the presidential selection process when good candidates refuse to run because of concerns over the attention given their family. It's akin to the lack of civility that plagues this nation, and that former Rep. Lee Hamilton spoke about last week in Muncie.

Loud talk, no stick

Not on their best day in their wildest dreams:

President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron kick off two days of diplomacy this morning by pledging to work against repressive regimes in the Middle East -- by force if necessary.

Skip a year

Whenever I visit my brother in Hill Country, I catch up on Texas politics. One thing that's always amazed me is that its legislature meets only every two years. Only three other states -- Montana, North Dakota and Nevada -- still have biennial legislative sessions. States began opting for the biennial system in the 19th century when travel as more difficult, and as recently as 1940, only four states had legislatures that met every year.

The end is near

Omigod, has anyone told Harold Camping yet? We could certainly use his guidance and spiritual counseling:

A pair of astronomers say inabout 1 billion years the output of our Sun will go up enough to evaporate the oceans and rivers into water vapor.

Oh, wait, that's "billion," not "million." I shouldn't have been so quick to become flabbergasted. Never mind.

Listen up, fellow schmucks

Fair warning

It could happen here:

The Supreme Court, in a narrow 5-4 decision, has an upheld an injunction by a three-judge panel ordering California to release about 46,000 inmates -- more than one-fourth the state prison population -- over the next two years to relieve overcrowding.

That case, again

Good for him -- Attorney General Greg Zoeller has joined the chorus of critics urging the Indiana Supreme Court to revisit its 3-2 ruling that "the right to reasonably resist an unlawful police entry into a home is no longer recognized under Indiana law."

Mitch bails

Tons and tons of stuff out there about Mitch Daniels' decision not to run for president. I like this:

Big shift

Those of you who like to note turning-point (or tipping-point) milestones might consider that history could look back on this year as a major one. Several major polls this year have recorded for the first time that a majority of Americans now favor legalizing gay marriage. Now add Gallup:

Oops, almost

Now that Mitch Daniels seems almost ready to announce a presidential bid, people are scouring Lexis/Nexis to find evidence of conservative heresies. The search for his remarks on health care have so far produced only one damaging quote -- from a piece in the South Bend Tribune during his gubernatorial bid -- which seemed to indicate support for an individual health-care mandate.

This will work

Indiana got screwed. Under the original provisions of the Northwest Ordinance, Illinois would have had a boundary tangent to the southern tip of Lake Michigan, giving the state no Lake Michigan shoreline.

Twofer Ted?

Wow. Unabomber Ted Kaczynski is already one of our most notorious domestic terrorists. Wouldn't it be something if he were also the one behind another famous scare?

The FBI said Kaczynski was among "numerous individuals" from whom the Bureau tried to obtain voluntary DNA samples as part of a reexamination of the 1982 killings in which seven Chicago residents ingested Tylenol capsules laced with deadly cyanide.

Fee for nothing

The JG today has this long story about how the franchise fees paid to the city indicate how the cable companies are doing. Comcast shelled out more than $376,000 for the first quarter, compared with about $343,000 from Frontier, which indicates Comcast nabbed some customers. In the pervious quarter, however, Frontier paid more than Comcast, so it probably had the most customers then:

Scan this

Hey, you, put down that smartphone and quit eavesdropping on the police:

There is a popular smartphone application that even the dumbest criminals are catching onto, and it could put law-abiding people in jeopardy. It turns your phone into a mobile police scanner, and it's illegal for most people to have.

Here's your pat-down, kid

What could possibly go wrong?

A western Indiana school district wants to give its bus drivers the authority to search students for weapons or drugs.

The Tribune-Star reports that the Vigo County School Corp.'s proposal would allow the drivers to search a student and the student's belongings if there is an immediate threat of harm or danger to those on the bus.

Make me rich, and feed me, too

Now hear this

Congratulations to the state and the governor for having the courage not to be tolerant. Many parents and students affiliated with the Indiana School for the Deaf are upset with Gov. Mitch Daniels for his appoinment of three new board members with ties to the mainstreaming approach to teaching deaf children, an approach that encourages them to listen and sometimes read lips.

For the children

It's commendable to keep "the children" and their welfare in mind when considering public policy, but it can get out of hand. Judges in Tippecanoe County are proposing new rules intended to shield youngsters from the bickering and resentment that often accompany divorce:

Brick bat

The Fort Wayne City Council is considering an ordinance that would require the city to maintain existing brick streets, a costly proposal that only the council's self-designated penny-pincher protested:
