Tailing the Komets

A few notes

* Through the first 23 games of this season, the Komets had scored only 48 goals and were in danger of breaking the franchise record low of 2.37 goals for set in the 2003-04 season. Over the last 29 games, they have scored 101 goals to go 19-7-3. They are currently averaging 2.87 for the season.
The biggest change during that time? The forming of the line with Colin Chaulk centering Tab Lardner and Derek Patrosso. They have combined for 30 goals over the last 25 games. Lardner has scored 17,Chaulk seven and Patrosso six.

Komets lose 5-3

And frankly, they got what they deserved from that effort. It should have been 4- or 5-1 after the first period but Nick Boucher kept them in the game. Mario Larocque scored two goals in the final five minutes to give the Icemen the win.

This is a trap game

And the Komets are falling into it.

The crowd is late-arriving because of the mess of the coliseum lobby, the Komets might be a tad overconfident against the last-place Icemen, and they've had two bad penalties early. It's already 1-0 Icemen when it should probably be 3- or 4-0 except Nick Boucher has saved their butts already. The Evansville goal was also a fluke with Jordan Little

WANE's Friday highlights

Couple of things I noticed

Could not believe how patient the Komets were against Quad City's trap, especially in the first half of the game. The Komets attacked this game like is was being played on the road, and it worked. They did it by doing a great job in their own zone. The Mallards were getting one shot and no rebounds, but the Komets were beating the trap by making an extra pass in their own zone which was causing the Mallards' forecheck to commit and then that opened up the middle for the forwards. That was great coaching.

Ratchuk heads back to Springfield

He leaves first thing in the morning on a recall.

`` I think a big part of it is the trade deadline is Monday,'' Ratchuk said. ``I know they put a guy back on waivers and they have only six guys, so I'm going back up there as insurance in case somebody gets hurt. Maybe guys get traded, or maybe they won't and I'll come back. I guess I'll know after Monday. I love being here, and the guys here are awesome. I think it's hard up there because I haven't been playing all year. It's been a rough year, but I just have to deal with it.''

It was off a 2-on-1 with Lardner. Patrosso shot high and then scooped up the rebound. Komets look suprisingly good for a Friday. Very sharp against the Mallards' trap.

That was after Adam Russo stoned Dan Lapointe on a breakaway.

Bonus Komets TV coverage

Otto has informed me that because there were some problems playing last week's ``Komets Game of the Week,'' there's going to be a mini-marathon shown Wednesday night. At 8 p.m., the Dayton game from Friday night will be shown, followed by the Evansville game from the 1

The Komets have done a fantastic job of late killing penalties, giving up only two power-play goals in their last 47 chances against, and one of those was a 5-on-3 last Friday after Tab Lardner had already scored in that series. To me, that's the biggest ingredient to any playoff team besides goaltending.
