So long, and stay off the lawn

Even if you stay home, not answering the phone, not opening the mail, not getting online, the scumbags will still find a way to try to get you:

The Fort Wayne police department is aware of a possible scam being performed in the area.

Just trying to help

The Journal Gazette's Sunday Perspective section had a couple of pieces by people who, it could be argued, do not exactly have in mind  the best interests of the people they are criticizing. First up is Tracy Warner, who says the local GOP won't succeed without its moderate wing:

Judgment call

One of our readers (third letter) has an interesting (to say the least) view of traffic laws:

Any speed limit is a compromise between the appropriate speeds for good conditions and very bad conditions.

[. . .]

I would prefer that the police concentrate on obvious crimes, such as burglary, rather than strict enforcement of arbitrary regulations.

Win some, lose some

On restaurants, we get two:

After more than four months of renovations, two restaurants in downtown Fort Wayne are scheduled to reopen this week.

Both Don Hall's Old Gas House at 305 East Superior Street and Takaoka of Japan are scheduled to reopen Wednesday.

And lose one:

Holding on to Harding

Outgoing EACS Superintendent Kay Novotny has recommending closing Harding High school and putting those students in New Haven High School for the sensible reason that "it is an aging building in a township that needs only one high school." The suggestion has drawn the ire of some constituents, mostly Harding parents:

No active discussion has been had about whether closing Harding is even an option, and many in the community feel they have been left in the dark because of that.

No sex, please, this is New Haven

Why, you silly, ignorant lummox. This is not a porno palace, not in New Haven, Ind. This is an institution dedicated to saving failing marriages:

"80 percent of American families have some sort of adult novelty, I've seen many marriages saved by having adult novelties of some sort," said the owner of Cupid's Castle.

[. . .]

Two stories

No conclusion offered, except what you might infer from the fact I'm putting both these stories in the same post. First up:

A 52-year-old Swedish woman has been left out of pocket after she was lured into handing over her cash to secure an imaginary lottery win.

Specter of death

I know that if I were running the Republican Party, the editorial page of The Journal Gazette is the first place I'd go to for advice. So let's see what the editors have to say under the heading, "Specter's defection shows need for less GOP conservatism."

Specter was a Republican long known as an independent-minded moderate. He is pro-gun and pro-choice. Indeed, he is conservative on many issues

Vera interesting

Can someone explain this to me?

Preparations are underway for the Vera Bradley outlet sale at the Coliseum.

The sale starts tomorrow morning at 8 am.

33,000 people from across the country have already registered for the event.

This is the first year tickets aren't required, but shoppers will need to register once they get there.

Manly law

Dahlia Lithwick, writing in Newsweek, says it's about time we had more females on the bench, because men are too fond of "rigid rules and clear lines" while the women tend to favor an "ethic of care" over and "ethic of rights." ("Women: Truly the Fairer Sex" says the headline. Ha, ha; cute pun.)
