Opening Arguments

Now, this is a real new world order

What could possibly go wrong?

In a submission to forthcoming international talks on internet governance, the Gulf state said “there is a crying need for international collaboration to address ‘freedom of expression’ which clearly disregards public order”.

Our "B" governor

The Cato Institute, which is very good at watching budgets and crunshcing numbers, has issued its final 2012 report on the nation's governors, , grading them on their taxing and spending records.

That empty chair is mine

A lot of Republicans are hoping for exactly that, Mr. President:

President Barack Obama has offered his take on the debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan, saying "Joe just needs to be Joe."

Of course, they probably don't agree with you on who the real Joe is, but, hey, that's politics for you.

Complex and surprising

Why, yes, it makes perfect sense that global warming would result in more Antarctic ice:

While the North Pole has been losing sea ice over the years, the water nearest the South Pole has been gaining it. Antarctic sea ice hit a record 7.51 million square miles in September. That happened just days after reports of the biggest loss of Arctic sea ice on record.

O no, Gaga!

Some things are just beyond parody:

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Pop star Lady Gaga was awarded a peace prize by Yoko Ono in a ceremony in Iceland on Tuesday.

Peace activist Ono said the LennonOno Grant for Peace, established in the name of her late husband, former Beatle John Lennon, rewarded Lady Gaga for combining stardom with activism and changing "the mental map" of the world.

The fattest cats

Priorities

Empathy:

A man who lost a son to the war in Afghanistan is disappointed in the condolence letter he received from President Barack Obama.

Tom Logan, a Willis resident, calls the note late, impersonal, disrespectful and essentially a form letter.

Chutzpah

When Indiana Tech announced it would open Indiana's fifth law school last year, my reaction was, "Oh, goody, more lawyers." Now that the school is closer to opening, it's reaping scorn:

A new law school is opening its doors in Indiana in 2013, and it wants you to enroll even though it isn't accredited yet and the tuition is nearly $30,000 per year.

Going to extremes

Going down to the wire, huh?

A new independent poll confirms that the U.S. Senate race in Indiana is a tossup, the latest case of Republicans having to fight for a seat in a conservative state they’d been expected to win easily.

A lawless town

Point? Click? What?

You've seen all those stories about "kids today" or "teens today" who have known only a world with cell phones, or only a world with Internet acess and blah blah blah. We've finally come to this:

Outadjusted

Boy, that was the most exciting, satisfying second half I've seen in a long time:

Faith in justice

Are these people nuts?

A parole board panel has recommended the release of a former Charles Manson follower imprisoned for 40 years for a double murder Manson engineered, but it's not the last hurdle Bruce Davis will face as he seeks his freedom.

Undecided

I agree with just about everybody else in the free world that Mitt Romney won the first debate against President Obama, but I don't think it was quite the beatdown some think it was. Yes, Romney was good, but sometimes the other team helps you win, and Obama was just awful. Republicans in danger of becoming overconfident should remember that the next debate is a town hall format in which the questions will be asked by "undecided voters selected by the Gallup Organization."

Here they come

I know from comments on earlier posts that some of you aren't bothered all that much by the growing number of surveillance cameras. Hey, they're in public places where we have no expectations of privacy, right? But how close to your front door do they have to get before you'll get worried?

Trash cams

The food nannies kick it up a notch:

TAVARES, Fla. - Lake County School Board officials are considering attaching cameras to school cafeteria trash cans to study what students are tossing after officials found that most of the vegetables on the school menu end up in the trash can.

Heck of a day

This is how bad it is:

On the first day of fiscal year 2013, the federal government added more debt than was accumulated between the nation’s founding and sometime in October 1942, about ten months after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, a span of about 166 years.

More suckers sought

Not sure this is such a good idea:

Indiana's lottery commission voted Wednesday to hire a private company to take over its marketing and other services in the hopes that it will boost the lottery's profits.

Good reason to stay home

Yikes!

Visitors pay among the highest travel taxes in the nation when they come to Indianapolis — 17 percent on hotel rates, 15 percent on rental cars and 9 percent on meals.

Hey, you loser

An essay in the Wall Street Journal explores "Why We Are So Rude Online":

Why are we so nasty to each other online? Whether on Facebook, Twitter, message boards or websites, we say things to each other that we would never say face to face. Shouldn't we know better by now?
