Congratulations, you lost!

This reaction to the United States moving on in World Cup play despite its loss to Germany seems a little overwrought to me:

Sorry, World, but that is bullshit. And I don't even care if it helped America. It's not American style to lose but advance. We won a game, we tied a game, and then we lost a game, but still we advance. Why not just give every country in the world a "cup"? A big cup... of lameness.

Inexplicable

Near the end of the Super Bowl yesterday, a friend texted, "What happened to the Broncos?" I texted back: "Total collapse when it mattered most. Inexplicable."

That was a flip, spur-of-the-moment comment, but I wouldn't change it today except to perhaps make it a little more artful. Reading the mountain of commentary hasn't made it more understandable. Stuff like this:

Sheriff Taylor, RIP

Awww, Ange:

Actor Andy Griffith, who won the hearts of 1960s TV viewers with his role as gentle Sheriff Andy Taylor in “The Andy Griffith Show,” then returned as a 1980s country lawyer in “Matlock,” died Tuesday at 86, according to WITN-TV.

RIP, Goober

Awww, shoot, Ange, Goober's gone:

George Lindsey, the Alabama-born actor and comedian best known for playing the good-natured if none-too-bright gas station attendant Goober on three television series, died on Sunday in Nashville. He was 83.

Peyton place

So, Peyton Manning and the Colts are parting company. We all knew it was coming, and the Colts won't be as much fun to watch while they're in rebuilding mode. The most interesting part to me is the what's-next-for-Manning question:

How will Manning's final chapter play out?
