All about me

Too much, for now

I'd love to believe this, but I have my doubts:

Libertarianism has been touted as the wave of America's political future for many years, generally with more enthusiasm than evidence. But there are some tangible signs that Americans' attitudes are in fact moving in that direction.

[. . .]

Hazardous liaison

All right, everybody out of the pool except the straight, healthy people!

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- An employee at a public swimming pool in eastern Kentucky was suspended for a week without pay after telling two disabled gay men to leave, city of Hazard officials said Saturday.

Rock of ages

Want to feel really, really old, baby boomer music lovers? Check out this gallery of rocks stars then and now. Keith Richards may have aged the worst, although all the Rolling Stones look like they were buried then dug up. On the female side, Patti Smith and Grace Slick take the "Oh, God, my eyes!" prize. David Bowie and Joan Jett still look pretty good. Does anything look sadder than 60-something rocksters still dressing the same way they did 40 years ago?

Old school

Too bad:

As graduation day arrives, students will say goodbye to their classmates and teachers. And many are departing without a traditional yearbook to preserve those memories.

State budget cuts and the weak economy are causing elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country to either do away with yearbooks or look for more cost-effective publishing options.

Hey, dog

Night moves

Me, too:

In my younger years, I regarded sleep as a necessary evil, nature's way of thwarting my desire to cram as many activities into a 24-hour day as possible.

Again, likewise:

The clock is ticking

We love the game, but don't mess with us, OK?

Yet Commissioner Roger Goodell conceded the owners' lockout of players that is in its third month -- and with no end in sight -- is doing damage to the NFL. Fans, he said, are beyond restless.

O, brother!

I made it all the way to today -- the day after Oprah's last show -- in keeping my vow to myself not to comment. I mean, saying something snide about the insipid queen of gush and how she epitomizes the banality of popular culture, we're talking fish-in-a-barrel time. But, really, this just sent me over the edge:

It was a dark and stormy afternoon

I really lucked out with this afternoon's storm. It uprooted this tree right across the street from me but left the big sycamore in front of my house alone. It could have done serious damage to three houses, but it appeared mostly to have hurt the one in the middle.

The hour is getting late

Sigh. Ouch. Gulp. Or LOL, OMG and WTF, if you you prefer. Bob Dylan turns 70 this week.
