Opening Arguments

End game

Oh, for God's sake, the game is over, and you won. Give it up:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation Monday after months of draining controversy drew expressions of relief from Republicans and a vow from Democrats to pursue their investigation into fired federal prosecutors.

Work, work, work

How cool to be able to go to work without having to, you know, go to work:

Imagine a work world with no commute, no corporate headquarters and perhaps not even an office in the physical world at all.

For Bob Flavin, a computer scientist at IBM; Janet Hoffman, an executive at a management consulting firm; and Joseph Jaffe, a marketing entrepreneur, the future is already here.

Man's best and worst

At least Michael Vick didn't issue a non-apology apology:

"I made a mistake of using bad judgment and making bad decisions. Those things just can't happen. Dogfighting is a terrible thing, and I do reject it."

Fat nation

How are we going to close in on No. 1 if we're going in the wrong direction?

We're still fat.

Indiana ranked ninth out of all states in the Trust for America's Health annual report of obesity in the United States.

And while Indiana fell a notch from last year, when it was tied for eighth, the percentage of overweight adults here rose slightly from 26.2 to 26.8, according to the report.

The few, the proud

I love women, though some drive me crazy. I admire men, though some are jerks. I am not and never have been gender neutral, which probably means I would  be a bad fit in Vermont:

The University of Vermont's big new student center doesn't just have women's bathrooms and men's bathrooms.

Burn, baby, burn

The Citizens Action Coalition is one of those groups that can always find lots of reasons to be against modern society and the energy it takes to fuel it; if it had been around at the end of the 19th century, it would have have been pushing buggy whips as the environmentally friendly wave of the future.

War wound

This is what it says in the Fourth Amendment: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. " But we have a war against drugs going on, and this is sometimes the reality:

A sensitive lawyer

The right not to be annoyed continues to grow:

The Environmental Court in Växjö has banned a woman from smoking in her own garden, Sydsvenkan reports. The 49-year-old single mother is enraged by the decision but says that she will obey the ruling to avoid having to pay a fine.

The sounds of silence

Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? You also don't know how special something was until you're overwhelmed with it.

The real parallels

The trouble with arguing historical analogies:

But Mr. Bush's statement also revived a perennial question. Whenever a public officials starts to say “the lesson of,” is that a cue to stop listening?

Here we go again

As much of this city as Gianni Longo is going to end up having shaped, maybe he should just move here:

Bad promise

I shouldn't be picking on Obama over this; I don't think many of the other candidates -- not the Democrats, certainly -- have an appreciation for federalism, either. But he has a habit of saying directly what others only hint at:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama said Sunday the country cannot fail New Orleans again and that as president, he would keep the city in mind every day.

Anticipation

The law goes a step too far:

As part of a Government drive to curb anti-social behaviour, police have been granted new powers to ban troublesome drinkers from town centres.

Officers in England and Wales are able to issue "directions to leave" to people they believe will cause alcohol-related crime or disorder.

Good news, bad news

There is no such thing as an economy that is good news for everybody:

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - The owner of a fast food joint in Montana's booming oil patch found himself outsourcing the drive-thru window to a Texas telemarketing firm, not because it's cheaper but because he can't find workers.

Flat or fair?

Do you think the current tax code should be scrapped? If so, what would you replace it with -- a flat tax or the FairTax, which is essentially a national sales tax. Democrats don't like such talk at all, and the Republicans seem to be sort or circling around the FairTax. The idea has its critics, including a former deputy Treasury secretary writing in The Wall Street Journal:

Bad men

Hey, guys, we're being profiled:

When children get lost in a mall, they're supposed to find a "low-risk adult" to help them. Guidelines issued by police departments and child-safety groups often encourage them to look for "a pregnant woman," "a mother pushing a stroller" or "a grandmother."

The implied message: Men, even dads pushing strollers, are "high-risk."

Please and thank you

Just think, if we'd tried a little kindness and been more polite, maybe those nasty inmates from Arizona wouldn't have rioted in our prison:

Prison wardens have been urged to show respect to inmates by knocking on cell doors before going in.

The advice was included in an inspection report from Anne Owers, the chief inspector of prisons.

The mask

All of us have crises of faith, go through days and years wondering why we're still doing what we're doing, live in terror of  the rest of the world catching on that we're faking it. But the agonizing doubt and spiritual pain endured by Mother Teresa are unimaginable:

Something to look forward to

Well, thank goodness. I'd hate to think the rest of my life will be defined by my 50s:

Sex and interest in it do fall off when people are in their 70s, but more than a quarter of those up to age 85 reported having sex in the previous year. And the drop-off has a lot to do with health or lack of a partner, especially for women, the survey found.
