Opening Arguments

Kin folk

Most people writing about the film career of Patrick Swayze discuss his two most famous roles in "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost." Many delight in his role as the Zen bouncer ("I will

Hot stuff

The Food Network has discovered one of my favorite Indianapolis restaurants:

Chefs and foodies travel all over the
world to experience the best culinary fare, and Dr. BBQ believes St. Elmo
Steak House's shrimp cocktail is the best thing he has ever eaten. The
Indianapolis favorite will join the ranks of echelon dishes celebrated on the
Food Network show, "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.
during a segment taping at the restaurant.

Our poor swath

Perhaps it's time for those of us who've been fighting against the spread of gambling in Indiana to just give it up as a lost cause:

Former Republican state Sen. Robert Meeks of LaGrange said he wanted lawmakers to allow residents of Steuben County in far northeastern Indiana to vote in a 2010 referendum on whether they would accept a casino. He said northeastern Indiana was the only large swath of the state without a casino.

One way to be gay-friendly

I guess I see the state's point. Gay marriages aren't recognized here, so it's not exactly logical for a gay couple married elsewhere to seek a divorce here. But that creates a problem:

Gay and lesbian couples from Indiana can get married in more places than ever, but they could face a legal dilemma after they return home.

RIP, Norman Borlaug

"An adequate supply of food is the first component of social justice." That was from the speech of Norman Borlaug in 1970 when he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize; he was one of the winners who actually deserved the prize. It is said that he saved a billion lives, which might be a slight exaggeration, but he certainly saved tens of millions with his work on wheat and rice that resulted in far greatrer yields per acre.

Reciprocity

Straynge days

Good luck on that starving-the-stray-cats plan:

If you feed a stray cat in Terre Haute, you may soon be breaking the law.

[. . .]

The local shelter is full, so strays freely roam Terre Haute neighborhoods.

The fix is in

Aww, man! Just when I had all my plans made:

9/11

Sorry Charlie

Just in time for tomorrow's eighth-anniversary observance of 9/11, Charlie Sheen shows us the proper boundaries of discussion by going beyond them:

In an exclusive contact with the PrisonPlanet.com website, Sheen reveals 1) that he voted for Barack Obama in November and 2) that he [Sheen] has become convinced that the 9/11 attacks were an inside government job perpetrated by people inside government for inside and no doubt nefarious reasons.

The realdeal

An issue the administration and its Republican foes have not debated yet (but any day now, I'm sure):

Is it "health care" or "healthcare?"

The red underline in my browser says "healthcare" is misspelled, but sometimes browsers are better at surfing than spelling, especially in areas where popular use is evolving a spelling or word meaning.

True blue fans

There must be a saner way than this to support Indiana foster children:

Ladies man

A real class act:

Three women have filed a sexual-harassment lawsuit against Gary W. Collins, a chief Floyd County probation officer who was the target of another complaint that was settled privately six years ago.

Health care two-step

A waste of time

It never, ever ends. Hoosiers really, really don't like change, except when they're trying to undo a change they really, really hate:

A group that wants to move all of Indiana into the Central Time Zone is asking state legislators to reopen the time debate.

Friedman falls flat

Thomas Friedman clearly knows what this country needs to do. But foolish Republicans just don't understand the way the world has changed:

Pervs in the park

Sometimes, all those attempts to ban sex offenders from parks don't seem so draconian:

A registered sex offender caught fondling himself at an Evansville park is charged with public nudity. Around 8:00 p.m. Monday a woman walking her dogs spotted 43-year-old James Krietemeyer inside his car with his pants down.

Guide to affective usage

A Hoosier TV station discovers an important issue:

TERRE HAUTE, Ind (WTHI) - Global warming is the name scientists have given to a series of climate changes around the world.

Urine trouble now

Here's your Wednesday morning eye-opener!

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (CN) - A man claims a Lawrenceburg police officer had him forcibly catheterized to obtain a urine sample because the officer suspected him of drunken driving. Jamie Lockard claims he was restrained and catheterized by force on Officer Brian Miller's orders.

Free no more

This proposal, put forth by a veteran high school English teacher, is a bad idea in so many ways:

With states across the country facing huge budget deficits and potential devastating cuts to services, the time has come to start charging parents tuition for their children's public school education.
