The state of the culture

Silly and dangerous

If the bible your profession goes by is "silly" and "worrying and dangerous," how valuable is the service you provide?

Millions of healthy people - including shy or defiant children, grieving relatives and people with fetishes - may be wrongly labeled mentally ill by a new international diagnostic manual, specialists said on Thursday.

Parade rest

A fair question is raised here:

The New York Giants on Tuesday will be showered with confetti and greeted by throngs as they are feted with the city’s most storied honor: a parade through its Canyon of Heroes.

Dear reader

My sister saves the crosssword puzzles from The Indianapolis Star for me. They're on the same page as cartoons and advice columns. After working one of the puzzles on vacation last week, I saw a piece by Judith Martin, who writes the Miss Manners column. A reader relates to Miss Manners an encounter with someone "obviously in the advanced stages of male-to-female traisition -- complete with feminine attire" and confesses to a dilemma:

Libertarian U.

My God, maybe there's hope for the future after all:

Even though on an issue-by-issue basis the opinions of incoming freshmen are becoming less conservative, the number of liberal students per se is not necessarily on the rise.

Moral matters

If Republicans weren't supposed to care about Bill Clinton's philandering, is it fair to ask Democrats to ignore Newt Gingrich's serial monogamy?

Saxon violins

Big bucks for an extensive study to State the Obvious:

From football thugs on the front line, most conflict can be blamed on the male sex drive, a study suggests.

Out of my way, Honey!

Not much about the Costa Concordia story is inspiring, is it? You remember the Titanic, women and children first and all that. If you think that fairy tale stuff is true, you probably still believe the captain should go down with his ship:

Utterly divine

Bet you didn't have a clue that God was a Denver Bronco fan:

DENVER (CBS Denver) — Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is not the only one who thinks God helps him on the football field.

Gay days

Shockingly, no city in Indiana made advocate.com's list of "15 gayest cities in America." Of course, it may not be the most accurate list in the world considering what city it named the gayest of all:

Alone

Why is it that, after a divorce, women won't get in another relationship unless they "fall madly in love with someone again," because they cherish their alone time, but men rush to get into another relationship as soon as possible because most of them "seem unable to live alone for longer than, say, at the outside, three months"?  Is it really all about the nest?
