Comings and goings

I haven't bothered you with a word-usage peeve lately, so indulge me today. Under the headline "Emigrant first in her family to earn degree," the South Bend Tribune has a story about a refugee from Bosnia getting her degree from Indiana University South Bend. There is this short paragraph:

She and her family eventually found their way back to their village, but learned there was no future for them there. They immigrated to South Bend 10 years ago.

Kiss off

Oh, drat, I can't make it:

Rock band Kiss will make its Indiana State Fair debut Aug. 9 at the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand.

Led by founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, Kiss is known for face paint, platform boots and 1970s hits “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Calling Dr. Love” and “Beth,” among others.

This just in

This story seems about a year or two too late to be even interesting, let alone important, doesn't it?

INDIANA (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The way people watch movies is rapidly changing, and those changes could be threatening the future of traditional video rental stores. There are more options than ever, and that means more competition.

Star Spangled

The Goshen College national anthem controversy has made USA TODAY:

"I am not in favor of the college's decision to play the anthem," said Marlys Weaver, 22, a senior from Goshen and editor of the college newspaper. "Images of war run throughout all the verses of the anthem, and Mennonites, as pacifists, work with active and involved non-violent options."

Who were they?

I've liked The Who a long time, but I must respectfully disagree with this:

The Super Bowl finally found its soundtrack with The Who, whose halftime show provided music as big and loud as the game itself.

Pick it, Steve

I've always been impressed by people who have talent in more than one area. And I have so much respect for people who can create music. So I'm especially awed by those who succeed in one field but probably could have done well in music, too. Politicians like Bill Clinton and his saxophone and Condi Rice and her piano. Comedian Jack Benny and his violin. NBA great Oscar Robinson with his flute.

Dance to the music

Bloomfield resident Damon D. Jackson had a baaad night:

According to the probable cause affidavit, the woman said they had been into an argument, she poured a drink on him and he hit her, then kicked or hit her in the back, then choked her, then grabbed the phone and hung it up when she tried to call 911, then smashed the phone to prevent her from calling again. She made the second call from a cell phone.

Gaga me with a spoon

The Chicago Sun-Times, believe it or not, has a blog devoted exclusively to Chicago's favorite talk show host -- "All Oprah. All the the time," says the subhead. The buzz on there Friday was about Lady Gaga, who canceled a Thursday night performance at Purdue University claiming illness ("An hour before the show I was feeling dizzy and had trouble breathing," she tweeted later):

Hurts so good

Sorry, kid, I think your old dad is just stringing you along:

Bob, Bob, Bobin' along

I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that Bob Dylan has a Christmas album. I'm one of the world's biggest Dylan fans, but this still has to rank as one of the oddest musical decisions of all time.
